Know Your Rights

Like their families, friends and neighbors, people with disabilities want the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities and to make contributions to their communities.

There are ten federal laws that protect the rights of children and adults with disabilities.  The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides the broadest  coverage by barring discrimination against people with disabilities in the following areas:

  • Employment
  • State and local government services
  • Public places like restaurants, movie theaters
  • Transportation
  • Telecommunications.

This landmark civil rights law gives more than 54 million Americans with disabilities the chance to participate fully in life.
